ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING
We are not passengers on
Spaceship Earth
We are the Crew
It’s time we took our responsibilities seriously

At Aldgate
there is a whole school commitment to environmental care and
action. The school’s focus on Values and Futures Education
is about ‘being’ rather than simply ‘doing’.
Our program
is informed by the State of the Environment Report and the
SACSA Framework. It runs in classrooms as well as through
electives each week. Our
program is a Sustainable School model where we are moving
from environmental education to education for
sustainability. We are all learning together about more
sustainable lifestyles through simple, everyday changes that
make a real difference.
The four strands are:
air/energy, water,
resource use/waste management, and biodiversity.
A small
snapshot of our activities include: propagation and planting
for the Valley of the Bandicoots project and
Our Patch, propagating and planting ‘no-water’
gardens, rearing biological control agents with Weed
Warriors, making bird boxes, solar activities, silk
screening calico bags, two litter free food days each week,
composting or worm farming our food scraps, and actively
reducing our paper, water and energy consumption.
The environment is
important to me because I want my grandchildren and their
grandchildren to have a nice place to live in, and we take
so much from the Earth that I think we should give something
back in return, like the natural habitat that animals need
to live in.
