SUSTAINABLE LEARNING

Biodiversity

A major environmental concern is the loss of biodiversity and its subsequent consequences on all life systems.

At Aldgate Primary School we are actively improving the biodiversity in the community by:

  • Respecting our vegetable gardens and propagation area.

  • Working towards clearing the Wirra of feral weeds.

  • Understanding the interdependence of local flora and fauna.

  • Respecting plants by not breaking off branches and leaving dead branches on the ground.

Waste Management

A major environmental concern is the over consumption or resources and the creation of large amounts of poorly disposed waste.

At Aldgate Primary School we :

  • Place recyclables into the recycling centre.

  • Place compostables into the compost bins.

  • Bring litter free lunches.

  • Keep our worms fed with scraps.

  • Recycle paper and cardboard.

Water

A major environmental concern is the high level of energy consumption based on fossil fuels and creating excess greenhouse gases.

At Aldgate Primary School, we:

  • Ensure all taps are turned off.

  • Have installed duel/flush toilet systems.

  • Learn about the importance water quality has on our lives.

  • Ensure that we guard the gutters from pollution.

Energy Management

A major environmental concern is the high level of energy consumption based on fossil fuels and creating excess green house effect.

At Aldgate Primary School we:

  • Turn lights off in areas nor being used.

  • Use hot water only as necessary.

  • Replacing fluorescent lights with energy saving lights.

  • Learn about the impact that high energy use and greenhouse effect has on the environment.

  • A new initiative has been the installation of solar panels in 2005

Developing Partnerships with the Wider Community

Sustainable schools work collaboratively with local community organisations to continually improve our environment.

At Aldgate Primary School in 2005 we have:

  • Collaborated with the Adelaide Hills Council and the Onkaparinga Water Board to improve the Wirra.

  • Supported Trees for Life by making available our propagation area and facilities.

  • Prorogated and planted natives to support the Valley of the Bandicoots program.

  • Participated in Air Watch.

  • Participated as Weed Warriors to assist the Adelaide Hills Council to fight noxious weeds.

  • Sponsored "Billy" the Dolphin

Life Long Learning

As a school we support learning at all ages to develop sustainable values, attitudes and behaviors.

In 2005 we have:

  • Continued to learn to reduce our waste, participated in KESAB and Clean Up Australia Day. The school's Community Recycling Centre provides an opportunity to continue these behaviors as adults.

  • Worked with the Aldgate Kindergarten to set up recycling processes and propagate plants for their new site.

  • Shared our learning with Christies Beach high school, North Haven and Cummeracha Primary Schools.

  • Our environmental Committee has joined the Hills/Murraylands Youth Environment Forum.

Building on the Past to Create a Great Future

As a Sustainable School we acknowledge the indigenous people and their culture. Aldgate Primary School has over a three year period developed a native grass garden which incorporates and highlights aspects of dreaming stories.

In 2005 we celebrated the opening of the garden as part of World Environment
